Frequently Asked Questions

A complete fire escape plan should include: all rooms with doors and windows clearly marked, two exit routes from each room (primary and backup), locations of smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, a designated outdoor meeting point, and clear escape path arrows showing the way out. Our tool lets you draw all these elements easily.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends practicing your fire escape plan at least twice a year. Conduct one drill during the day and one at night to ensure everyone knows what to do in different conditions. Time your drills β€” aim to evacuate in under 2 minutes.

Choose a meeting point that is: a safe distance from your home (at least 50 feet away), easy to find even in the dark, and not blocking firefighter access. Good examples include: a specific tree in the front yard, a neighbor's driveway, a mailbox, or a street lamp. Mark it clearly on your plan with the green meeting point icon.

Top home fire hazards include: cooking equipment (leading cause of home fires), heating devices (space heaters, fireplaces), electrical malfunctions (frayed cords, overloaded outlets), candles left unattended, smoking materials, and clogged dryer vents. Knowing these helps you place extinguishers and alarms strategically on your plan.

Click the Print button in the toolbar (or press Ctrl+P / Cmd+P). Our tool generates a clean, high-resolution printout optimized for standard letter/A4 paper. The printed plan excludes all UI elements and includes only your floor map with escape routes β€” perfect for posting on the refrigerator or in a common area.

You can right-click the canvas and select "Save Image As..." to download a PNG snapshot of your current plan. While the tool doesn't store data on a server, you can also take a screenshot. For future editing, keep the browser tab open or save the image as a reference to recreate your plan quickly.

For multi-story homes, create a separate plan for each floor. Use the templates or start fresh for each level. Pay special attention to stairwells and ensure upper floors have escape ladders for windows. Mark all stair locations clearly, and designate a meeting point that works for all exit paths from every floor.

Smoke alarms should be placed: inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home (including the basement). Marking them on your escape plan helps you verify coverage and reminds you to test alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly. Interconnected alarms provide the best protection.
