Frequently Asked Questions

A Unicode block is a contiguous range of code points that are grouped together because they serve a common purpose — such as covering a specific writing system (like Latin, Greek, or Arabic), a set of symbols (like mathematical operators or emoji), or control characters. Each block has a unique name and a defined start and end code point. The Unicode Standard defines over 300 blocks spanning from U+0000 to U+10FFFF.

As of Unicode 16.0, there are over 330 defined blocks covering the entire range from U+0000 to U+10FFFF. Some blocks are fully allocated with assigned characters, while others have reserved code points for future use. The largest block is the CJK Unified Ideographs block (U+4E00–U+9FFF) with 20,992 characters, while some blocks contain just a handful of characters.

Browse through the block cards to find a script or symbol set you're interested in. Use the search box to filter blocks by name (e.g., "Latin", "CJK", "Emoji"). Click a block card to open the character grid, where you can hover over individual characters to see their Unicode code point, UTF-8/UTF-16 encoding, and HTML entity. Click any character to copy it to your clipboard instantly.

Control characters are code points in the ranges U+0000–U+001F and U+007F–U+009F that do not represent visible glyphs. They were originally designed for text formatting and device control (like TAB, LINE FEED, CARRIAGE RETURN). In our browser, they are displayed as gray cells with their official abbreviation (e.g., NUL, TAB, LF, DEL) to distinguish them from printable characters.

The replacement character ďż˝ (U+FFFD) appears when a code point is unassigned in the Unicode Standard or when your system font does not have a glyph for that character. This is common for reserved code points within blocks. To properly view all characters, install a comprehensive Unicode font like "Noto Sans" or "Arial Unicode MS" which cover a wide range of scripts.

The CJK Unified Ideographs block (U+4E00–U+9FFF) is the largest single block in the Basic Multilingual Plane, containing 20,992 code points for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) characters. These ideographs are shared across multiple languages with sometimes different meanings and pronunciations. Due to its size, our browser displays it in paginated views of 256 characters each for smooth performance.
