A crossword puzzle is a word game where players fill white squares with letters to form words based on given clues. Words intersect both across and down, with black squares separating words. The first modern crossword was published in 1913 by Arthur Wynne in the New York World newspaper.
Numbers are placed in cells where a word begins β either left-to-right (Across) or top-to-bottom (Down). A single cell may have both an Across and Down number. The numbering follows a simple rule: scan left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and assign a number whenever a white cell starts a new word in either direction.
Good clues are concise, fair, and clever. They avoid obscure trivia unless the puzzle is themed. Common clue types include: direct definitions, synonyms, wordplay (anagrams, puns), fill-in-the-blank phrases, and trivia. A well-crafted clue gives just enough information for the solver to deduce the answer without being too obvious.
Regular crossword solving improves vocabulary, enhances memory, sharpens problem-solving skills, and may help delay cognitive decline. Studies suggest that mentally stimulating activities like crosswords can reduce the risk of dementia. Plus, it's a relaxing and satisfying hobby enjoyed by millions worldwide.
Start by choosing a theme and a list of words. Place the longest words first on the grid, then fill in intersecting words. Use our Create Mode to design the grid β click cells to toggle blocks, type letters for answers, and add clues. The tool auto-numbers cells and detects all words automatically. Once saved, switch to Solve Mode to test your puzzle!
Start with the easiest clues (often fill-in-the-blanks or short words). Look for common prefixes/suffixes like -ING, -ED, RE-, UN-. Use crossing letters to narrow down possibilities. Don't be afraid to erase and revisit clues later. Practice increases your pattern recognition for common crossword words like ERA, ORE, EEL, and ALOE.
