Frequently Asked Questions

A drum pattern sequencer is a music production tool that lets you program rhythmic patterns using a grid of steps. Each row represents a drum sound (kick, snare, hi-hat, etc.), and each column is a moment in time (a "step"). By activating steps, you build a repeating loop β€” the foundation of electronic beats, hip-hop, techno, and pop music. Our online sequencer uses real-time audio synthesis, so no downloads or samples are needed.
Start by clicking the Play button, then click on individual step cells in the grid to activate drum hits. A classic starting pattern: place Kick on steps 1, 5, 9, 13; Snare on steps 5 and 13; and Hi-Hat Closed on every odd step. Adjust the BPM slider to change tempo. Experiment with different combinations β€” you can also load a Preset for instant inspiration.
Hip-Hop / Trap: 60–100 BPM
House: 120–130 BPM
Techno: 125–145 BPM
Drum & Bass: 160–180 BPM
Rock / Pop: 100–130 BPM
Reggae / Dub: 70–90 BPM
Lo-Fi / Chill: 70–90 BPM
Use our Tap Tempo button to find the BPM of any song by tapping along.
Swing (or shuffle) adds a groove by delaying every other 16th-note step. At 0% swing, all steps are evenly spaced. At higher swing values (30–50%), the rhythm feels looser and more human β€” essential for hip-hop, jazz, and funk-inspired beats. Use the Swing slider in the control bar to dial in the feel you want. Even subtle amounts (10–20%) can make a huge difference.
Yes! Use the 8 / 16 / 32 step selector in the control bar. 8 steps is great for simple, minimal patterns. 16 steps is the classic standard (one bar of 4/4 with 16th-note resolution). 32 steps gives you two full bars for more complex, evolving patterns. Switching preserves your existing pattern data where possible.
We provide 8 synthesized drum sounds generated in real-time using the Web Audio API: Kick (deep bass drum), Snare (crisp backbeat), Hi-Hat Closed (tight & short), Hi-Hat Open (sizzling sustain), Clap (layered snap), Tom High & Tom Low (tuned toms), and Crash (bright cymbal). Each track has its own mute button and you can preview sounds with the β–Ά button.
Each drum row has a circular Mute button (marked "M") at the right end. Click it to silence that track β€” the button turns red when muted. Click again to unmute. This is handy for isolating specific drums during playback or building tension by dropping elements in and out.
While this browser-based sequencer doesn't directly export audio files, you can record your system audio using free tools like Audacity, OBS Studio, or your device's screen recorder. For sharing patterns, simply take a screenshot of your grid. We're working on MIDI export and WAV recording features for future updates. Your pattern data stays in your browser during the session.
