Frequently Asked Questions

An ordinal number tells the position or order of something in a list (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd). Unlike cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3) that count quantity, ordinals show rank or sequence.

The rule depends on the last digit: numbers ending in 1 use "st" (1st, 21st, 101st), except 11. Numbers ending in 2 use "nd" (2nd, 22nd), except 12. Numbers ending in 3 use "rd" (3rd, 23rd), except 13. Everything else gets "th" (4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 20th, 100th).

Because in English pronunciation, the numbers 11, 12 and 13 end with a "th" sound ("eleventh", "twelfth", "thirteenth"). So they always take the -th suffix, regardless of the last digit.

Use the “Ordinal → Number” direction in our tool. It strips the suffix (st, nd, rd, th) and returns the plain integer. Works even if the suffix is incorrectly applied, but we recommend using proper ordinal forms.

Yes! Paste “January 1st” into the text sentence panel, select “Ordinals → Numbers”, and the tool will replace “1st” with “1”, giving “January 1”.

Absolutely. It works for any integer up to JavaScript’s safe integer (9,007,199,254,740,991). The ordinal rule is based on the last two digits, so very large numbers are converted just as reliably as small ones.

Ordinal suffixes are only applied to whole numbers. If you enter a decimal or fraction, the tool will take only the integer part for conversion (e.g., 3.14 → 3rd). In text mode, only whole numbers are detected and replaced.

In English, we write the number followed immediately by the two‑letter suffix, without a space or superscript (unless you prefer stylistic superscripts). Example: “She finished 3rd in the race.” The tool automatically outputs this format.

Cardinal numbers answer “how many” (1, 2, 3). Ordinal numbers answer “which position” (1st, 2nd, 3rd). Our converter helps you switch between these two types instantly.

Yes, switch to the “List / Batch” tab. Enter numbers or ordinals separated by commas or new lines, choose the conversion direction, and hit Convert. The output list will keep the same separator format.
