Frequently Asked Questions

A Random Name Picker Wheel (also called a spin wheel or raffle wheel) is an interactive online tool that randomly selects a name from a list by simulating a spinning wheel. Each name occupies an equal-sized slice, and when the wheel stops, the pointer indicates the randomly chosen winner. It's widely used for giveaways, classroom activities, team assignments, and decision-making — offering a fun, visual alternative to plain random number generators.

Our wheel uses a cryptographically strong randomization approach: before each spin, the winning index is pre-selected using JavaScript's Math.random() combined with multiple full rotations (5–8 complete turns) plus a random offset. The deceleration uses an ease-out cubic curve, mimicking real-world physics. Every slice has an equal probability of being selected, and the visual spinning is purely for engagement — the outcome is determined before the animation begins, ensuring no bias.

There is no hard limit — our wheel can technically handle up to 50+ names. However, for the best visual experience and readability, we recommend keeping your list between 2 and 30 names. With more than 30 names, the slices become narrower and text may appear smaller. If you have a very large group, consider splitting them into smaller batches or using the auto-remove feature to run multiple rounds.

When auto-remove is turned on (default), the winning name is automatically removed from the list after each spin. This prevents the same person from being selected twice — perfect for raffles and giveaways where each participant should win only once. If you disable this option, all names remain on the wheel, allowing repeat selections (useful for classroom cold-calling or daily decision-making). You can toggle this feature anytime using the checkbox.

Absolutely! Our Random Name Picker Wheel is fully responsive and optimized for all screen sizes — from large desktop monitors to tablets and smartphones. On mobile devices, the wheel automatically resizes to fit your screen, and the layout stacks vertically for easy one-handed use. The spin button and name editor remain fully accessible with touch-friendly tap targets.

You can easily copy your name list from the text editor and paste it into any document or note app for safekeeping. The tool also remembers your list during the current browser session. For regular use, we recommend keeping a master list in a text file or spreadsheet, then pasting it into the tool whenever you need to run a draw. The preset buttons also provide quick-start templates for common scenarios.

Spin wheels are incredibly versatile! Popular use cases include: giveaway & raffle drawings (select winners from contest entries), classroom engagement (randomly call on students), team icebreakers (assign random groups or roles), meeting facilitators (choose who presents next), restaurant decisions (pick where to eat), game nights (determine player order), and daily stand-ups (select who goes first). The visual nature of the spinning wheel adds excitement and perceived fairness to any random selection process.

Yes! Our wheel features optional tick sounds as the pointer passes over each slice boundary during rotation, plus a celebratory chime when the winner is revealed. This audio feedback enhances the suspense and excitement of the draw. You can toggle sounds on or off at any time using the speaker icon button near the settings area. Sound is enabled by default for the full experience.
