Frequently Asked Questions

This tool uses the native Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia) built into modern browsers. When you click the record button, your browser prompts you to select a tab, window, or screen to share. The captured video stream is recorded using the MediaRecorder API directly in your browser. No data is ever uploaded — everything happens locally on your device, and the final file is saved as a WebM video.

WebM is an open, royalty-free media file format designed for the web, developed by Google. It uses VP8/VP9 video codecs and Opus/Vorbis audio codecs, offering excellent compression with high quality. WebM is natively supported by all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera) and is ideal for screen recordings because of its balance between file size and visual clarity. You can play WebM files in VLC, any browser, or convert them to MP4 if needed.

No! This screen recorder works entirely in your browser with zero installations. It leverages the built-in Web APIs available in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other modern browsers. There's no need for extensions, plugins, or desktop software. Just open this page, grant screen-sharing permission when prompted, and start recording.

Absolutely. All recording happens locally on your device. The video stream never leaves your browser — it is not uploaded to any server. The final WebM file is generated client-side and downloaded directly to your computer. We have no access to your screen content, audio, or recordings. This makes it ideal for sensitive content like business presentations, personal tutorials, or confidential meetings.

Yes! Select the "System + Mic" option to capture both your computer's internal audio and your microphone input simultaneously. When the browser sharing dialog appears, make sure to check the "Share audio" checkbox for system sound. You'll also be prompted to grant microphone access. Both audio tracks are automatically merged into the final WebM file.

Desktop browsers with full support:
  • Google Chrome 72+ (recommended)
  • Microsoft Edge 79+
  • Mozilla Firefox 66+
  • Opera 60+
  • Brave (Chromium-based)
Safari has limited support. Mobile browsers (iOS/Android) generally do not support screen capture APIs. For the best experience, use Chrome or Edge on desktop.

No hard limit! You can record for as long as you want. However, keep in mind that longer recordings produce larger files. For very long sessions (1+ hour), we recommend checking your available disk space. The tool shows a live file size estimate during recording so you can monitor storage usage. There's also a pause/resume feature if you need to take breaks.

If you need MP4 format, you can convert the WebM file using free tools:
  • FFmpeg (command line): ffmpeg -i recording.webm -c:v libx264 output.mp4
  • VLC Media Player: Media → Convert/Save
  • Online converters like CloudConvert or Convertio
  • HandBrake (free, open-source video transcoder)
Note: Re-encoding may cause slight quality loss. WebM is natively playable in all modern browsers and video players.

Common reasons for missing audio:
  • You didn't check the "Share audio" checkbox in the browser's screen-sharing dialog
  • Your audio setting is set to "No Audio" or "Mic Only" when you expected system sound
  • Your system's audio output is muted or set to very low volume
  • On macOS, Chrome requires additional permissions for system audio capture
  • Some applications (like certain DRM-protected content) block audio capture

WebM offers several advantages for screen recordings:
  • Open format — no patent restrictions or licensing fees
  • Optimized for web — small file sizes with high visual quality, ideal for sharing online
  • Browser-native — plays directly in any modern browser without plugins
  • Efficient compression — VP9 codec delivers excellent quality at lower bitrates than H.264
  • Streaming-friendly — supports progressive downloading for web playback
  • Lossless option — VP9 supports lossless mode for archival-quality recordings
Your privacy is guaranteed — all processing is done locally. · Powered by Web APIs (Screen Capture + MediaRecorder) · Output: WebM (VP8/VP9 + Opus)
