Frequently Asked Questions

What is text alignment and why does it matter?
Text alignment refers to how text is positioned horizontally within a defined width. Left alignment (ragged right) is most common for body text as it's easiest to read. Center alignment works well for titles and headings. Right alignment is used for dates, page numbers, and languages that read right-to-left. Justified text creates clean, even margins on both sides — ideal for newspapers, books, and formal documents.
How does the justify feature work?
Our justify algorithm distributes extra spaces evenly between words so that each line (except the last line of a paragraph) stretches to exactly match the set line width. The last line of each paragraph remains left-aligned, following standard typographic convention. For text without spaces (e.g., Chinese or Japanese), spaces are inserted between characters to achieve justification.
Why should I use a monospace font for alignment preview?
Text alignment tools rely on every character having the same width to ensure accurate column alignment. Monospace (fixed-width) fonts like Courier New, Consolas, or SF Mono guarantee that each character occupies the same horizontal space. In proportional fonts, letters like "i" and "w" have different widths, causing misalignment. Our preview always uses monospace fonts to show you the true, accurate result.
What line width should I use?
The optimal line width depends on your use case. For terminal output or code comments, 80 characters is standard. For printed documents, 60–70 characters per line is comfortable to read. For wide screens or presentations, 100–120 can work. Our tool defaults to 80 and offers quick presets for 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 characters — you can also fine-tune with the slider between 20 and 200.
Can I align multi-paragraph text?
Yes! Our tool intelligently detects paragraphs separated by blank lines and processes each paragraph independently. For justify mode, the last line of each paragraph stays left-aligned while all other lines are fully justified. Simply paste your multi-paragraph text and the tool handles the rest automatically.
Is this tool free to use? Do you store my text?
This text alignment tool is 100% free with no registration required. All processing happens locally in your browser — your text is never uploaded to any server, stored, or shared. You can use it with confidence for sensitive or private content. No ads, no tracking, no limitations.
What's the difference between left align and justify?
Left alignment positions text flush against the left margin with a ragged (uneven) right edge — each line starts at the same point but ends wherever the words naturally break. Justified text has both left and right margins flush, achieved by adding extra space between words so every line spans the full width. Left alignment is generally easier to read, while justified text looks more formal and polished in print layouts.
