Frequently Asked Questions

Guitar tablature (tab for short) is a visual notation system that shows you exactly where to place your fingers on the guitar fretboard. It consists of six horizontal lines representing the six strings of the guitar. Numbers on these lines indicate which fret to press. It’s much easier to read than standard musical notation, especially for beginners.

You input a sequence of note names (like C, D, E, G). The tool maps each note to the closest possible fret on a real guitar neck, considering the chosen tuning. It then generates an ASCII tab that shows the fret numbers on the correct strings, ready to be copied and played.

You can use basic note letters (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) with optional sharps (C#, D#, F#, G#, A#). Adding an octave number (e.g., C4, E5) is optional. If no octave is given, the tool assumes a default octave (middle = 4) and steps upward for each subsequent note.

This version is designed for single-note melodies. To convert chords, you can enter the notes of the chord as a group separated by parentheses or slashes (e.g., (C E G) for C major). The tool will place them on adjacent strings as much as possible. For full chord support, check future updates.

The tool supports Standard (EADGBE), Drop D, Half-Step Down, Open G, and DADGAD. If you need a custom tuning, you will soon be able to enter your own string notes in a future update.

The algorithm chooses the lowest possible fret on the lowest string number that can play the note, mimicking typical guitar fingerings. It avoids open strings when a fretted alternative exists nearby. The result is a playable and realistic tab for most simple melodies.

ASCII tab is plain text tablature that can be easily shared in forums, text files, emails, and social media without special software. It’s lightweight, universally readable, and perfect for quick song sketches. This tool generates perfectly aligned monospaced tab that looks great anywhere.
