Frequently Asked Questions

Simply enter a Start Date and an End Date in the "Duration Between Dates" tab. The tool instantly calculates the total calendar days, workdays (Monday–Friday), weekend days, and breaks down the result into weeks, months, and years. By default, the calculation includes both the start and end dates — you can toggle this off if needed.

Calendar days count every day on the calendar, including weekends and holidays. Workdays (or business days) typically refer to Monday through Friday, excluding weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Our tool calculates both, so you can see at a glance how many working days fall within any date range — useful for project planning, payroll, and contract timelines.

The tool examines each day in the selected date range and counts only Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday as workdays. Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. When you use the "Add/Subtract Workdays" mode, the tool intelligently skips weekends — for example, adding 3 workdays to a Friday will land on the following Wednesday (skipping Saturday and Sunday).

Currently, this tool excludes weekends (Saturday and Sunday) but does not automatically exclude public or federal holidays, as these vary by country, region, and year. For precise business day calculations that account for holidays, we recommend using the workday count as a baseline and manually subtracting any additional holiday dates that apply to your specific situation.

Switch to the "Add / Subtract Days" tab. Enter your starting date, choose the number of days, select "Workdays" as the day type, and choose whether to add or subtract. The tool will compute the resulting date by counting only Monday–Friday, automatically skipping weekends. For instance, adding 5 workdays to a Monday gives you the following Monday (7 calendar days later).

Including the end date means both the start and end dates are counted. For example, Jan 1 to Jan 3 with "include end date" yields 3 days (Jan 1, Jan 2, Jan 3). Without it, the result is 2 days (the difference between the dates). This distinction is important for hotel bookings (nights vs. days), rental agreements, and legal deadlines. Our tool lets you toggle this to match your specific use case.

Leap years add an extra day (February 29) every 4 years. Our tool uses JavaScript's built-in Date object, which correctly handles leap years according to the Gregorian calendar. This ensures that date ranges spanning February in a leap year are calculated accurately — for example, Feb 28, 2024 to Mar 1, 2024 correctly accounts for the leap day.

Date duration calculators are widely used for: project management (estimating task timelines), payroll processing (counting working days in a pay period), event planning (counting down to an event), legal contracts (calculating notice periods), travel planning (trip duration), academic scheduling (semester lengths), and personal use like counting days until a birthday or anniversary.
