Frequently Asked Questions

What is Earth View Image Curator?
Earth View Image Curator is a free online tool that lets you explore stunning satellite and aerial images of our planet. Randomly curated from high-quality sources, each scene showcases Earth's diverse landscapes — from towering mountains to vast deserts, lush forests, and vibrant cities. You can save favorites, browse by category, and download images for personal use.
Where do these satellite images come from?
Our curated collection features imagery from public sources including NASA Earth Observatory, ESA Sentinel missions, USGS Landsat program, and high-quality aerial photography. Each image is carefully selected to represent the breathtaking diversity of Earth's terrain as seen from space and above.
Can I download the images for free?
Yes! All images displayed in the curator are available for personal, non-commercial download. Simply click the download button or press the D key. Images are typically provided at high resolution suitable for wallpapers, presentations, and personal projects. Please check individual image credits for commercial use.
How does the random curation work?
Our algorithm intelligently selects images from a diverse pool spanning 10+ geographic categories. It avoids showing the same image twice in a session and prioritizes variety. You can also filter by specific categories like Mountains, Oceans, Deserts, or Cities using the category bar, or browse your history to revisit past discoveries.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
We've included several handy keyboard shortcuts:
Space — Random new image
← → — Navigate history
S — Save to favorites
D — Download current image
H — Open history panel
F — Toggle fullscreen
Esc — Close panels
Is this tool mobile-friendly?
Absolutely! Earth View Image Curator is fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices. The interface adapts seamlessly to smaller screens with touch-friendly buttons, swipe-support for navigation, and a compact category bar that scrolls horizontally. You can enjoy Earth's beauty on any device, anywhere.
How are favorites and history saved?
Your favorites and browsing history are stored locally in your browser using localStorage. This means your data stays private on your device — no account required, no data sent to servers. You can clear your history at any time. Note that clearing browser data will reset your collections.
What's the difference between satellite and aerial imagery?
Satellite imagery is captured by Earth-orbiting satellites at altitudes of 200–800+ km, providing broad coverage and consistent revisit times. Aerial imagery is taken from aircraft or drones at lower altitudes (typically 300m–5km), offering higher detail but covering smaller areas. Our curator includes both types, celebrating Earth from every perspective.
Can I suggest new locations or images?
We welcome suggestions! While this is a curated tool, we regularly update our image collection. If you know of stunning Earth views or have publicly available satellite imagery you'd like to see featured, feel free to share via our contact channels. We're always looking to expand the diversity of our collection.
How often is the image collection updated?
Our image collection is refreshed periodically with new scenes from ongoing satellite missions and photography projects. Major updates typically occur quarterly, with special additions during notable Earth observation events. The tool also dynamically fetches fresh content from connected sources when available.
