Frequently Asked Questions

A photo collage maker is an online tool that lets you combine multiple photos into a single, visually appealing composition. Our tool offers two modes: Grid mode arranges photos into neat rows and columns (perfect for clean, structured layouts), while Freeform mode lets you drag and drop photos anywhere on the canvas for a creative, scrapbook-style arrangement. Simply upload your images, choose your layout, customize colors and spacing, and export your collage as a high-quality PNG file.

Our collage maker supports JPG (JPEG), PNG, and WEBP image formats. You can upload images of any resolution — they will be automatically fitted into the collage cells using smart cropping (object-fit: cover). For best results, we recommend using photos with similar aspect ratios, especially when working in Grid mode. The maximum recommended file size per image is 10MB to ensure smooth performance.

Switching modes is simple — use the Grid / Freeform toggle buttons at the top of the tool. In Grid mode, photos snap into a clean CSS grid layout with adjustable spacing and various preset sizes (2×2, 3×3, 4×4, etc.). In Freeform mode, you can click and drag individual photos to any position on the canvas, creating overlapping and scattered compositions. When switching from Grid to Freeform, your photos will transition to Freeform positions while keeping their general arrangement. Note that spacing settings only apply to Grid mode.

Absolutely! You can choose from a variety of solid colors (white, gray, dark tones, pastels) or select a custom color using the color picker. We also offer six gradient backgrounds ranging from soft purples to vibrant pinks, blues, and greens. The background is fully visible in the spacing gaps between photos in Grid mode, and as the canvas backdrop in Freeform mode. All background settings are preserved when you export your collage.

Click the "Export as PNG" button to download your collage. The export uses html2canvas technology to render your collage at 2× resolution, ensuring crisp, high-quality output. The exported PNG file maintains the aspect ratio of your chosen canvas (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, etc.). For the sharpest results, we recommend using the largest canvas display possible before exporting — on desktop, the canvas renders at up to 800px wide, and the 2× export scale produces a 1600px wide image for square ratios.

Yes, completely. All photo processing happens locally in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server — they remain on your device at all times. The collage is generated client-side using JavaScript, and the export is rendered directly in your browser. This means your photos stay private and secure. You can use this tool offline once the page is loaded, and no data is ever transmitted externally.

Tips for stunning collages:
• Consistent aspect ratios: Photos with similar orientations (all landscape or all portrait) create a cleaner Grid layout.
• Color harmony: Choose a background color that complements your photos. Neutral tones work well for most images.
• Spacing matters: In Grid mode, 8-12px spacing creates a clean look; 0px spacing gives a seamless mosaic effect.
• Freeform creativity: In Freeform mode, try clustering related photos together with slight overlaps for a dynamic, editorial feel.
• Less is more: For Grid mode, 4-9 photos often produce the most impactful collages. Overcrowding can make individual images hard to appreciate.

Yes! In Freeform mode, every photo is fully draggable. Simply click and hold any photo, then drag it to a new position on the canvas. The photo you're dragging automatically comes to the front (highest z-index), making it easy to layer photos. You can rearrange your composition as many times as you like. Photos also have a delete button (Ă—) that appears on hover, allowing you to remove individual images without affecting the rest of the layout.
