Frequently Asked Questions

A pairwise comparison tool helps you rank a list of options by comparing them two at a time (head‑to‑head). Instead of trying to sort everything at once—which can be mentally taxing—you simply choose your preferred option from each pair. The tool then uses the Elo rating system to calculate an overall ranking based on all your choices. This method is widely used in decision science, sports rankings, and product prioritization.

The Elo system assigns each option an initial rating of 1000 points. When you compare two options and pick a winner, the winner gains points and the loser loses points. The number of points exchanged depends on the rating difference: if a lower‑rated option beats a higher‑rated one, the point swing is larger (an "upset"). Ties cause both ratings to move toward each other slightly. Our tool uses a K‑factor of 32, which provides a good balance between stability and responsiveness for typical comparison sessions.

The total number of unique pairs for n options is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2. For example, 5 options produce 10 unique pairs, while 10 options produce 45. You don't necessarily need to complete every pair—the Elo system yields a meaningful ranking even with partial data. However, comparing every pair at least once gives you the most reliable results. After all unique pairs are done, you can continue refining by re‑comparing closely‑rated options.

Absolutely! Click "View Results" at any time to see the current rankings based on the comparisons you've made so far. The more pairs you compare, the more accurate the ranking becomes, but you're never forced to finish every possible pair. You can also resume comparing later by clicking "Continue Comparing" from the results screen.

Selecting "Tie / Skip" treats the comparison as a draw. In Elo terms, both options receive a score of 0.5 for that match. If the two options have different ratings, the higher‑rated one will lose a small number of points while the lower‑rated one gains a small number—reflecting the idea that a tie against a weaker opponent is a slight underperformance. Use this when you genuinely cannot decide between two options.

Pairwise comparison shines when you have many options and find it difficult to mentally sort them all at once. Humans are much better at comparing two items than at ranking a long list. Use this tool for: prioritizing product features, evaluating job candidates, deciding on a vacation destination, ranking personal goals, comparing vendors, or any scenario where you need a clear, defensible ranking from subjective preferences. It's also excellent for group decision‑making—have each stakeholder complete the comparisons and aggregate the results.

The Elo system is statistically robust and widely used in competitive gaming, chess, and sports. After comparing all unique pairs once, the ranking is generally very reliable. Accuracy improves further if you re‑compare closely‑rated options. The tool also tracks win/loss/tie records for full transparency, so you can cross‑check the Elo scores against raw win percentages. For critical decisions, we recommend completing all unique pairs plus a few refinement rounds on tight matchups.

To keep the Elo ratings consistent, you cannot add or remove options mid‑session. If you need to change the option list, click "Reset" to return to the input screen, modify your options, and start a fresh comparison. This ensures all ratings are calculated on a level playing field.
