About Tangram Puzzles

What is a tangram puzzle?
A tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of 7 flat polygonal pieces (tans) which are arranged to form a square. The objective is to replicate a target shape using all 7 pieces without overlapping. It originated in China during the Song Dynasty and remains one of the world's most popular puzzle games.
What are the 7 tangram pieces?
The seven pieces (tans) are: 2 large right triangles, 1 medium right triangle, 2 small right triangles, 1 square, and 1 parallelogram. All triangles are isosceles right triangles, and all pieces together form a perfect square. The area ratio is 4:2:1:1:2:2 for large triangles : medium triangle : small triangles : square : parallelogram.
How many shapes can you make with tangrams?
Over 6,500+ distinct shapes have been documented using all 7 pieces! These include animals, people, objects, letters, and geometric patterns. However, mathematicians estimate there may be many more possible configurations when considering rotations, reflections, and valid non-overlapping arrangements.
What are the rules of tangram puzzles?
The classic rules are: 1) Use all 7 pieces for each shape; 2) Pieces must lie flat (2D); 3) No overlapping of pieces; 4) Pieces may be rotated and flipped (reflected); 5) All pieces must touch, though they don't all need to connect to every other piece.
Why is tangram good for learning?
Tangram puzzles develop spatial reasoning, geometric intuition, problem-solving skills, and creativity. They help children understand concepts like area, symmetry, congruence, and transformation geometry. Studies show regular tangram play improves math performance and visual-spatial working memory.
