Digital Time Capsule

A digital time capsule is a message or piece of content that you create now but set to be "opened" or revealed only after a specified future date. It's a modern take on the traditional time capsule concept — instead of burying physical objects, you seal digital words, thoughts, goals, or memories to be unlocked at a meaningful future moment. This tool lets you write a message, set an unlock date, optionally protect it with a password, and share it via a unique link.

Our tool uses client-side encryption. Your message and metadata are encoded into the shareable URL itself — no data is stored on any server. If you set a password, the message content is encrypted using that password before being embedded in the link. Without the correct password, the content cannot be decrypted. However, please note that this is a front-end tool; for extremely sensitive data, consider using end-to-end encrypted services with backend authentication. The unencrypted metadata (title, unlock date, creation date) remains visible so the recipient can see when the capsule opens.

Once a capsule is sealed and the link is generated, the data is embedded directly in the URL. There is no central database, so you cannot edit or delete it remotely. Think of it like a physical letter — once sealed and sent, it cannot be taken back. If you need to change something, you'll need to create a new capsule and share the new link. We recommend double-checking your message and unlock date before sealing.

If you lose the link: The capsule data exists only within that unique URL. There is no way to recover it — no account system, no database backup. We strongly advise you to save the link somewhere safe (bookmark it, email it to yourself, or store it in a notes app).

If you forget the password: The message is encrypted with your password. Without the correct password, the content cannot be decrypted. There is no password recovery mechanism. Choose a memorable password or store it in a password manager.

You can write up to 3,000 characters in your capsule message. This includes letters, numbers, emoji, and special characters. We recommend keeping messages concise — around 500–1,500 characters is ideal for a meaningful yet readable time capsule. Longer messages result in longer URLs, which may be harder to share via some platforms. All Unicode characters including emoji 😊 are fully supported.

The unlock date is stored relative to the creator's local timezone at the moment of creation. When the recipient opens the link, the comparison is done in their local timezone. This means there may be slight timezone differences — for example, a capsule set to unlock at "January 1, 2026, 12:00 PM" in New York (EST) will appear to unlock at 9:00 AM in Los Angeles (PST) on the same calendar day. For precise timing across timezones, communicate the intended timezone to your recipient.

This tool is designed for personal, casual use — letters to your future self, birthday wishes, goal setting, memory keeping, or fun surprises for friends. It is not suitable for legal documents, contracts, or official records. The data is stored entirely in a URL with no backend verification, audit trail, or tamper-proof guarantees. For legal or official purposes, consult a qualified professional service with proper authentication and archival infrastructure.

There is no hard limit — you can set the unlock date decades into the future. The date picker supports dates far into the future, and the countdown timer will accurately track the remaining time whether it's 1 day or 50 years. Just keep in mind that the capsule data lives in the URL, so you'll need to keep that link safe for as long as needed. For very long-term capsules (10+ years), consider also saving the message elsewhere as a backup.

Yes! Since all processing happens in your browser (client-side), you can use this tool without an internet connection once the page is loaded. Creating capsules, encrypting messages, and generating links all work offline. However, sharing the link with others naturally requires sending it through some online channel (messaging app, email, etc.). The recipient also needs to load the tool page to decrypt and view the capsule.
