A standard full cord is a tightly stacked pile measuring 4 feet high × 4 feet deep × 8 feet long for a total volume of 128 cubic feet. This includes wood, bark, and air space.

A face cord is a stack 8 feet long and 4 feet high, but the depth varies based on the firewood piece length (usually 12 to 24 inches). Since depth changes, a face cord is not a fixed volume—our calculator shows how many 8'x4' face cords your stack contains.

Measure the stack's total length, height, and the average piece length (depth) in feet and inches. Make sure the wood is neatly stacked with minimal large gaps. Our calculator lets you input feet and inches separately for the most accurate results.

Different woods have different energy densities. Dense hardwoods like oak and hickory can deliver 24–28 million BTU per cord, while softwoods like pine average only 14–16 million BTU. Always buy seasoned (dry) wood for best efficiency.

A well-insulated home in a moderate climate may use 3–5 full cords of hardwood per season. Colder regions or larger homes can burn 6–8 cords or more. Using the BTU estimate here can help you compare with other heating fuels.

Green wood contains 30–60% moisture, which wastes energy evaporating water. Seasoned (air‑dried) wood below 20% moisture gives significantly more heat. Our BTU values assume well‑seasoned wood.

One full cord equals approximately 3.62 cubic meters. A face cord (16‑inch depth) is about 0.45 cords or 1.63 m³. Use our calculator to switch between cords and face cords easily.

The tool is designed for feet/inches and North American cord standards. For metric, convert meters to feet (1 m ≈ 3.28 ft) beforehand, or simply use the volume in cubic feet and multiply by 0.0283 to get cubic meters.
