Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate deck boards, measure your total deck area in square feet. Divide this by the coverage area of a single board (board length in feet × board width in feet). Then add a waste factor of 10–15% for cuts, mistakes, and natural defects. For deck boards with gaps (typically 1/8″ to 1/4″ for drainage), factor in the gap spacing — the effective width per board becomes (board width + gap). Our calculator above handles all of this automatically.
A waste factor of 10% is standard for most rectangular rooms with simple layouts. For diagonal or herringbone patterns, use 15–20%. For decks with angled cuts, stairs, or complex shapes, 12–18% is recommended. Always round up your final plank count and consider buying an extra pack for future repairs.
Gap spacing (typically 1/8″ to 1/4″) between deck boards allows for water drainage, air circulation, and thermal expansion. Without proper gaps, deck boards can warp, cup, or trap moisture leading to rot. The gap also means you need slightly fewer boards to cover the same area. Our calculator accounts for gap spacing so you get an accurate board count.
Most vinyl planks are approximately 6–7 inches wide and 48 inches long, covering about 2–2.3 square feet per plank. For a 200 sq ft room, you'd need roughly 87–100 planks before waste. Always check the manufacturer's specs for exact dimensions. Use our calculator with the vinyl plank presets for quick estimates.
Most flooring is sold in packs (boxes), with each pack covering 15–25 sq ft. It's wise to calculate both the plank count and the pack count, then round up to the nearest full pack. This ensures color consistency from the same batch and gives you spare planks for future repairs. Enter the planks-per-pack value in our calculator to see exactly how many packs to buy.
Nominal dimensions are the rough-sawn size (e.g., 5/4″ × 6″ for deck boards). Actual dimensions are smaller after planing and drying (typically 1″ × 5.5″). Always use actual dimensions for accurate coverage calculations. Our presets use common actual sizes. If in doubt, measure your boards and enter the exact width.
Yes! This calculator works for wall paneling, shiplap, siding, and any linear board coverage project. For wall applications, set the gap spacing to 0 (or a small reveal if desired). For sheet goods like plywood or drywall, use the plywood preset (4′×8′) which covers 32 sq ft per sheet. The waste factor is especially important for wall projects with many openings like windows and doors — consider 15–20%.
This calculator provides a highly accurate estimate based on the dimensions and waste factor you input. For best results, measure your area carefully, use actual (not nominal) board dimensions, and include a realistic waste factor. For very complex layouts with multiple angles or irregular shapes, consult a professional or add an extra 5–10% to the waste factor.
