Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the table size needed for a jigsaw puzzle?

Multiply the number of columns by the piece width to get the puzzle width, then add your desired safety margin (typically 5–10 cm or 2–4 inches per side). The same applies for height. Our calculator automates this — just enter the number of pieces, piece size, and aspect ratio.

What is the standard size of a jigsaw puzzle piece?

Standard adult jigsaw puzzle pieces are typically 1.5–2.0 cm (0.6–0.8 inches) across. Children's puzzles have larger pieces, around 2.5–3.5 cm. Mini puzzles can be as small as 0.8 cm. Our default value of 1.8 cm represents a typical adult puzzle piece.

How big a table do I need for a 1000-piece puzzle?

A typical 1000-piece puzzle measures approximately 70 × 50 cm (28 × 20 inches). With a 5 cm safety margin on each side, you'll need a table at least 80 × 60 cm (31 × 24 inches). We recommend a table of at least 90 × 70 cm for comfortable puzzling.

What's the best aspect ratio for a puzzle?

Most puzzles use a landscape (horizontal) orientation with an aspect ratio of approximately 1.3:1 to 1.5:1 (width:height). Square puzzles (1:1) and portrait (vertical) puzzles are also available. Choose based on your available space and personal preference.

Should I add extra space around my puzzle on the table?

Yes! A safety margin of 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) on each side is highly recommended. This gives you room to spread out unassembled pieces, use sorting trays, and prevents pieces from falling off the edge. For large puzzles (3000+ pieces), consider a 10–15 cm margin.

Can I use a puzzle mat instead of a dedicated table?

Absolutely. Puzzle mats are designed to hold puzzles securely and can be rolled up for storage. When choosing a mat, ensure it exceeds the puzzle's dimensions by at least 10 cm on each side. Our calculator's recommended table size also works as a mat size guide.

How accurate is this calculator for different puzzle brands?

This calculator provides estimates based on average piece sizes. Different manufacturers (Ravensburger, Buffalo, Clementoni, etc.) may have slightly different piece dimensions. For the most accurate results, measure a single piece from your specific puzzle or check the box for the completed puzzle dimensions.
