Frequently Asked Questions

How does this online voice recorder work?
This tool uses your browser's built-in Web Audio API and MediaRecorder API to capture audio directly from your microphone. All processing happens locally on your device β€” no audio data is ever uploaded to any server. When you stop recording, the audio is converted to WAV format (16-bit PCM) and downloaded to your computer.
Is my audio data private and secure?
Absolutely. All audio recording and processing happens 100% locally in your browser. We do not store, transmit, or have access to any of your audio recordings. Your voice recordings remain completely private on your device. You can use this tool offline after the page loads.
What is WAV format and why should I use it?
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is an uncompressed, lossless audio format developed by Microsoft and IBM. Unlike MP3 or AAC, WAV preserves every detail of the original recording without any quality loss. It's ideal for professional audio editing, archival, podcast production, and situations where audio fidelity is critical. The tradeoff is larger file sizes β€” approximately 10 MB per minute for CD-quality mono audio.
Which browsers support this voice recorder?
This tool works on all modern browsers including Chrome (v58+), Firefox (v53+), Edge (v79+), Safari (v14.1+), and Opera (v45+). On iOS devices, Safari requires iOS 14.5 or later. For security reasons, microphone access requires HTTPS or localhost.
Why isn't my microphone working?
Common reasons: (1) You may have denied microphone permission β€” check your browser's site settings (click the lock icon in the address bar). (2) Another app is using the microphone. (3) Your microphone is not plugged in or not set as the default input device in your system settings. (4) On macOS, ensure your browser has microphone access in System Preferences β†’ Security & Privacy β†’ Microphone. (5) Try refreshing the page and granting permission when prompted.
Can I pause and resume my recording?
Yes! Click the Pause button (or press the Space key) during recording to temporarily pause. Press Resume (or Space again) to continue recording. All audio is saved as a single continuous WAV file β€” there are no gaps or separate segments. This is perfect for taking breaks during long recording sessions.
How large will my WAV file be?
WAV files are uncompressed, so size depends on duration, sample rate, and channels. As a rough guide for 16-bit mono WAV at 48kHz: 1 minute β‰ˆ 5.6 MB, 5 minutes β‰ˆ 28 MB, 30 minutes β‰ˆ 168 MB. For stereo, double these numbers. If you need smaller files, consider converting the WAV to MP3 or AAC using a separate converter tool after downloading.
Can I record system audio or music playing on my computer?
This tool is designed for microphone recording only. To record system audio (like music streaming, YouTube videos, or game sounds), you would need a tool that captures your system's audio output, such as Audacity with loopback drivers, or a dedicated screen/audio recorder. Some browsers also support capturing tab audio via getDisplayMedia(), but that's a different workflow.
Does this tool work on mobile phones?
Yes! This voice recorder is fully responsive and works on both Android and iOS devices. On Android, use Chrome or Firefox. On iPhone/iPad, use Safari (iOS 14.5+) β€” other browsers on iOS may have limited support. Ensure you're on a secure HTTPS connection and grant microphone permission when prompted. The interface adapts to smaller screens for easy one-thumb operation.
What audio quality can I expect from browser recording?
Browser-based recording quality depends on your microphone hardware and the browser's audio processing pipeline. The tool captures audio using the MediaRecorder API at the highest available quality, then converts it to 16-bit PCM WAV. Most modern browsers support sample rates of 44.1kHz or 48kHz. For the best quality: use a good external microphone, record in a quiet environment, and speak close to the mic (6-12 inches away).
