Frequently Asked Questions

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break work into focused intervals (traditionally 25 minutes) called "pomodoros," separated by short breaks. After completing four pomodoros, you take a longer break. This technique helps improve concentration, reduce burnout, and boost productivity by creating a sustainable work rhythm.

Francesco Cirillo chose 25 minutes based on research into attention spans and optimal work-rest ratios. This duration is long enough to make meaningful progress on a task, yet short enough to maintain intense focus without mental fatigue. However, everyone's optimal focus duration differsβ€”our tool lets you customize the timer to match your personal productivity rhythm, from 5 to 90 minutes.

Short breaks (default 5 minutes) are taken after each individual pomodoro. Use them to stand up, stretch, grab water, or rest your eyes. Long breaks (default 15 minutes) occur after completing a set of pomodoros (default 4). These longer breaks allow for deeper mental recoveryβ€”take a walk, have a snack, or do something completely unrelated to work. Our tool automatically alternates between short and long breaks based on your interval settings.

Every time you complete a full focus session (pomodoro), it's automatically recorded in your history with the date, time, and duration. Your history is stored locally in your browser using localStorage, meaning it persists between visits and never leaves your device. You can view daily and total statistics, track your productivity trends, and clear your history at any time. Sessions you skip or reset are not recordedβ€”only fully completed pomodoros count.

Absolutely! Click the "Settings" button below the timer to customize your focus duration (5–90 minutes), short break duration (1–30 minutes), long break duration (5–60 minutes), and the number of pomodoros before a long break (2–8). You can also toggle auto-start for breaks and focus sessions, sound alerts, and desktop notifications. All settings are saved automatically to your browser.

The timer uses real-time clock synchronization, which means it continues counting down accurately even when the tab is in the background. When you switch back to the tab, the displayed time recalculates based on the actual elapsed time. However, closing the tab or browser will stop the timer. For the best experience, keep the tab open during your focus sessions. The page title also updates with the remaining time so you can monitor progress from other tabs.

A common target is 8–12 pomodoros per day for a full workday, which translates to about 4–6 hours of focused work. Beginners might start with 4–6 pomodoros daily and gradually increase. Quality matters more than quantityβ€”it's better to complete 4 highly productive pomodoros than 12 distracted ones. Use the history tracker to find your personal sweet spot and identify your most productive times of day.

Yes! Once the page loads, the timer works fully offline. No internet connection is required for timing, history tracking, or settings. All data is stored locally in your browser. The only features that may require online access are desktop notifications (browser-dependent) and the initial page load. This makes it perfect for deep work sessions where you might want to disconnect from the internet.
