Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome. They use combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet: I, V, X, L, C, D, M to represent values. This system was widely used throughout Europe until the late Middle Ages and is still seen today on clock faces, book chapters, and movie credits.

Start from the largest Roman numeral value (1000 = M) and work downwards. For each value, subtract it from the number as many times as possible and append the corresponding symbol. Use subtractive combinations like IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), and CM (900) to keep the numeral short. For example, 2024 = 1000 (M) + 1000 (M) + 10 (X) + 10 (X) + 4 (IV) = MMXXIV.

In standard form (without using a vinculum or extended symbols), Roman numerals represent numbers from 1 to 3,999. The number 3,999 is written as MMMCMXCIX. For larger numbers, the Romans placed a bar (vinculum) over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000, but this converter focuses on the traditional unextended range.

No, the Romans did not have a symbol for zero. The concept of zero as a number was introduced to Europe through Arabic mathematics much later.

The tool checks that the string contains only the allowed characters (I, V, X, L, C, D, M), follows subtractive notation rules (e.g., no more than three identical consecutive symbols, correct subtractive pairs), and the resulting decimal value lies between 1 and 3999. If the input passes these checks and converting back to Roman yields the same string, it is marked valid.
