Frequently Asked Questions

A voice pitch detector is a tool that analyzes sound from your microphone and determines the fundamental frequency (pitch) of your voice or any monophonic instrument. It displays the frequency in Hz along with the closest musical note and tuning deviation in cents.

This tool uses a technique called autocorrelation on the audio signal captured by your browser. It compares the waveform with time-shifted copies of itself to find the repeating pattern, which reveals the fundamental frequency. All processing happens locally in your browser; no audio is recorded or sent anywhere.

Absolutely! The detector shows both the frequency and the nearest musical note with cent deviation, making it perfect for vocal training, tuning a guitar, or checking intonation on wind instruments. For accurate tuning, ensure a quiet environment and a clear, sustained note.

Your privacy is completely safe. The microphone input is accessed only while you keep the tool active, and it is processed entirely in real-time within your web browser using the Web Audio API. No audio data is stored, recorded, or transmitted to any server.

Background noise, polyphonic sounds (multiple notes at once), or very quiet audio can confuse the algorithm. For best results, use in a relatively silent space and sing/play one note at a time. The detector is optimized for monophonic audio with a frequency range roughly between 80 Hz and 1000 Hz for voice, but it works beyond that.

One cent is 1/100th of a semitone. A reading of 0 cents means you are perfectly in tune with the selected reference pitch (default A4=440 Hz). Positive cents mean sharp, negative mean flat. Most listeners can't distinguish a difference smaller than 5 cents.
