Frequently Asked Questions
What is Text to Speech (TTS) and how does it work?
Text to Speech (TTS) is a technology that converts written text into spoken audio. It uses speech synthesisβ€”either via pre-recorded voice samples (concatenative) or AI-generated waveforms (neural/parametric)β€”to produce natural-sounding speech. Our tool leverages the Web Speech API built into modern browsers, giving you instant access to high-quality voices without installing any software. The synthesis happens entirely on your device.
Which browsers and devices support this TTS reader?
The tool works on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Opera (desktop & mobile). Chrome and Edge offer the widest selection of voices. Safari on iOS/macOS provides Apple's high-quality voices. Firefox supports TTS but has fewer built-in voices. For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Edge. On mobile devices, ensure your browser is updated.
Can I download the speech as an MP3 or audio file?
Currently, the Web Speech API does not support direct audio export. However, you can use screen recording tools or audio capture software (like Audacity with stereo mix) to record the playback. Some browsers also allow internal audio capture via developer tools. We're exploring Web Audio API integration for future download support.
Why does my speech stop unexpectedly during long texts?
Some browsers impose limits on speech synthesis duration or may pause when the device sleeps. This is especially common on mobile. To work around this: (1) Break long texts into smaller paragraphs and play them sequentially. (2) Keep your browser tab active. (3) Disable battery-saving modes that may throttle background audio. Chrome generally handles longer utterances better than Safari or Firefox.
How do I get more voices or better-quality speech?
Voices are provided by your operating system and browser. To add more voices: On Windows, go to Settings β†’ Time & Language β†’ Speech β†’ Add voices. On macOS, go to System Preferences β†’ Accessibility β†’ Spoken Content β†’ System Voice β†’ Manage Voices. On ChromeOS, voices are available via Chrome's settings. Google also provides enhanced neural voices on newer Chrome versionsβ€”check chrome://settings/accessibility.
Is my text data secure and private?
Absolutely. All text-to-speech processing happens locally in your browser using the Web Speech API. Your text is never sent to any server, uploaded, or stored. We do not collect, log, or transmit any of your content. This makes the tool ideal for reading sensitive documents, private notes, or confidential material. You can even use it offline once the page is loaded.
What does the "estimated read time" mean?
The estimated read time is calculated based on an average speech rate of approximately 150 words per minute (or ~900 characters per minute for English text) at 1x speed. Adjusting the speed slider will proportionally change the actual playback duration. This is an approximationβ€”actual time varies by voice, language, punctuation density, and the specific speaking rhythm of the selected voice.
Can I use this tool for learning a new language?
Yes! This TTS reader is excellent for language learning. Select a voice in your target language, paste text, and listen to accurate pronunciation. Adjust the speed slower (0.5x–0.75x) to catch every syllable, or use normal speed to train your ear. Many voices support French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and dozens more. Combine with reading along to improve both listening and reading skills.
